Problems with Blue Life Protection Dog Food

by Claire
(Dallas, TX)

We have been feeding our two German Shepard Lab Mix pups Blue Dog Food for over a year now.

In deciding to switch to Blue I did research and found that it did not contain the synthetic Vitamin K that is dangerous to dogs. I saw noticeable improvements in their coat, energy, and behavior. One pup was throwing up non stop and the other drinking excessive amounts of water. After switching to Blue this subsided.

Now I have two sick pups with diarrhea for over 7 days. One pup is limping and they are both off in their behavior-sluggish. After seeing the vet and looking at patterns, we saw that this started occurring just a few days after buying a new bag of the flavor we buy each time - Blue Buffalo Life Protection Large Breed Fish and Oatmeal.

Because of this I'm weary to buy it again. I know Blue had a recall end of 2010 because their manufacturer put too much Vitamin D in certain lines that caused the exact symptoms my pups have. We don't feed them table scraps and we keep the yard clean. That being said it could be random and we don't know the true cause. I just can't take a chance and will buy a different food.

Just feel people need to be warned.

Appreciation
by: LukeFX

I personally want to tell you that I appreciate and thank you for putting on here for everyone to see the truth about certain dog foods.

You may not be looking for a recommendation, but here's one anyways --->

I switched from Pedigree (Ew) to Taste of The Wild - High Prairie & I've seem nothing but their instincts kick in every time I bring a bag home - That being said, this brand seems to have the best ingredients, for the best price, that is also to me and my 3 dogs, the best dog food ever.

I've done countless hours of research & more research about this stuff, because I care, especially when I call them family.

The first 3 ingredients in my current brand type of specific dry dog food - High Prairie - is Bison, Lamb Meal, & Chicken Meal. Meals provide about 300% more meat and protein content than just seeing 'chicken' in the ingredients instead of 'chicken meal', for example. This brand also has a LOT of digestive help, as clearly seen in their feces, and in the ingredients!

Overall, I recommend Taste of the Wild to any true dog lover.

Problems with Blue dog food
by: Anonymous

My dog has been experiencing loose stools for over two weeks that has had no explainable cause. Immodium hasn't helped. He's now taking antibiotics to try to get him back to normal. He has been on Blue Adult with Lifesource bits, chicken and brown rice for over a year now and was doing well up until this episode. My vet tells me that 95% of dogs with diarrhea/loose stools that are occurring without an explainable cause are on Blue dog food. Looks like I'll have to try some other food.

Blue Dog Food
by: Anonymous

I was feeding my senior dog Blue in 2010 and he began having GI issues. He had several vet (we went to 3 different vet offices for opinions) visits and almost died! The vets couldn't find an exact cause (after many tests, meds, and a lot of $). I changed his food and within 3 days he was back to his healthy, happy self once again! I won't use Blue ever again!!

Problems with Blue Life Protection Dog Food
by: Venice (Bonita, CA)

I have purchased approximately six different bags of Blue dog food based on recommended dog food comparisons such as on this site. July 2011, I purchased Blue Life Protection Formula with Life Source Bits, Natural Chicken and Brown Rice Recipe, Small Breed Adult. The dog food smelled wrong when I opened it. My three dogs didn't want to eat it but they did after I added broth. Within a week they were all scratching and biting their skin to the point of red sores. After half the bag, I purchased another recipe of Blue dog food and threw out the bad dog food. Most of the itching symptoms decreased with the Blue Life Protection Formula, Natural Fish and Sweet Potato Recipe, but not enough. I have switched to Wellness brand dog food and the itching continues to decrease everyday.

Recall follow-up
by: Al

09/02/2011

Informed today of a recall for Blue Life Protection Formula Large Breed Adult Dog Chicken & Rice 30lbs, that originated in fall 0f 2010. What is the shelf life on this brand and type? The recall dates seemed to extend to a use by date of Sept. & Oct 2011. Upon contacting our local retailer, they are following up as best they can and will inform us of their findings.

To your knowledge, has this issue been resolved.

Thank you and as always, grateful for your website.
